What Do Americans think of
Adoption? |
| |
The Dave Thomas Foundation for
Adoption, with the cooperation of the Evan B.
Donaldson Adoption Institute, sponsored a research
project to determine the nations’ general public’s
attitudes, perceptions, concerns and opinions about
adoption. This led to many new and exciting findings
which can be read at: http://www.adoptioninstitute.org/survey/Adoption_Exec_Summ.pdf |

Adoption Language: Promoting
a Positive Image |
| |
As kids we
learned that “sticks and stones may break my bones,
but words will never hurt us,” but as adults, we
know this to be false. Too often negative words are
used to describe the process of adoption and those
involved, leaving us with a negative image of
adoption. In her article, “Adoption Language:
Promoting a Positive Image”, Sandra Hayden-Dowling,
MSW, gives tips on how to use appropriate language
while addressing adoption:

Tidbits for the training:
Accurate and Adoption Neutral Language

accurate and adoption neutral language. Certain
terms have the effect of closing doors and serve as
barriers to having an open discussion about
adoption. Here are some examples:
